Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki by Shunzan Kiln, Kyoto
A century of craftsmanship at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple

Since 1917, Shunzan Kiln has continued the tradition of Kyoto ceramics beneath the quiet foothills of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama. Drawing upon the refined aesthetics established by masters like Ninsei and Kenzan, this family kiln has carried its legacy through three generations of dedication and artistry.

This matcha bowl is adorned with delicately hand-painted red and white plum blossoms, a motif deeply associated with the arrival of spring and quiet strength. The pale, greyish-white glaze may bear faint pink or orange hues—subtle effects known as gohonde, formed naturally in the kiln during high-temperature firing. These gentle traces of flame are not flaws but the soul of kiln-fired beauty. No two bowls are alike.

Entirely handcrafted—from the shaping of the clay to the final brushstroke—this piece is suited for both daily tea practice and as a refined gift.
