Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki – Shunzan Kiln, Kyoto
Delicate form, seasonal grace, crafted with generations of skill
This small handcrafted matcha bowl is adorned with gently painted hydrangeas (ajisai), blooming across a softly textured surface. The clay’s natural hue subtly emerges through a white slip-glaze, expressing a warmth only achieved through hand-forming and traditional firing.
Its compact size is perfect for use in tea boxes (chabako) or seasonal tea gatherings, but also adapts beautifully for modern use—whether holding a café au lait, a small dessert, or light noodles. The floral motif, often associated with Kyoto’s quiet rainy days, brings a moment of calm into everyday life.
During firing, faint orange or pink hues may appear on the surface—a kiln-born effect known as gohonde. These marks result from a natural chemical reaction between minute iron in the clay and the flames, lending each bowl a character that cannot be replicated.
Crafted by Shunzan Kiln
A century of Kyoto ceramic artistry
Shunzan Kiln was founded in 1917 at the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. For over a century, it has carried forward the traditions of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, once refined by masters such as Ninsei and Ogata Kenzan. Today, under the direction of third-generation ceramicist Shunji Mori, the kiln continues to shape tea ware that harmonizes traditional aesthetics with contemporary life.

from 51 reviewsBest matcha ever! I will order again and again. Thank you for a wonderful product. It is a great way to start my day, every day!
Very smooth not bitter ❤️ love the color too very nice for lattes
Really good Matcha 🍵
Wow, so I never write reviews but had to for this. This matcha is incredible! I bought this randomly and was kind of like “eh why not” and I was shocked how delicious it was. I just bought two more!
I’ve tried a few brands and this is the only one I can drink plain.
I whisked it into usucha. Balanced, fresh, no harsh edge.

It’s gentle and clean. Not grassy. I actually crave it.
Thank you very much for the Matcha. And ii’m still celebrating its wonderfully robust flavor. I’m new to the taste of Matcha, but I will place another order with you soon. Patrick
I tried this pre-launch matcha on its own and in a latte. Honestly, it worked well both ways. The grassy sweetness came forward with milk, but on its own it was smooth and quietly floral. It's rare to find ceremonial-grade matcha that plays well with milk—this one surprised me.
I was part of the early tasting round before launch, and my main impression is: this matcha doesn’t shout. It doesn’t try to impress with overwhelming flavor. Instead, it invites. Soft, clean, no bitterness. Easy to drink without thinking, which oddly feels like a compliment.
Tried this as part of the pre-release group. It’s definitely easy to drink, clean, and very sweet. Almost too gentle for me—I’m used to matcha with more intensity. But I can see people loving this calmness.
What stood out most during this pre-launch tasting was the freshness and subtlety. The color is a soft green-blue—not overly bright, not dull. The flavor is clean, round, and mellow. No bitterness, no flashy umami. Just calm, drinkable matcha that asks nothing from you. I liked that.
